obama-in-mexico1The political, social and commercial circles in and around North America are abuzz with news of the summit in Mexico. Barrack Obama, president of US; Felipe Calderón, president of Mexico and Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada are scheduled to meet on Monday evening for the one of most important summits in the North American hemisphere. This meeting is the annual North American Leaders’ Summit, which is being held in Mexico this year.

The significance of this meeting can be gauged from the fact that after becoming the president, this will be the second meeting between Obama and his Mexican counterpart. With Mexico in the midst of severe drug wars and economic depression, Obama has promised to show solidarity and support that an able neighbor should exhibit. And, as the swine flu is gaining momentum day by day, both the countries have realized that a common and joint exercise can only stop this evil menace to further harm the public in general.

USA and Mexico has come a long way since the tragic War of Mexico in the 18th century, which formed the modern day California and Texas. Although the hardliners in Mexico still view US as the villain number 1, leaders in both the countries wish to move forward and create a peaceful and sober environment for growth and acceleration, which is the need of the day.

USA, Mexico along with Canada will try to diffuse many differences which still plague the relationship among them. One of them is the violation of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) by the USA. Mexican trucks are still not allowed in the USA, despite this being a clause in the NAFTA which was unilaterally signed by all the three countries.

Some concrete actions and statements are expected out of this meeting in Mexico City, Mexico by all the fractions of the society: from both the countries. The community at large will expect that at the end of the day, both countries should prosper and fight the challenges together.
