massive security

16 Dec 2009, Copenhagen

There is a massive police deployment across the Copenhagen after the protesters blocked the metro and rail lines. The Police helicopters are encircling Bella Centre that is the venue of the Copenhagen Climate Summit. Protesters are marching towards the venue despite the snow and sleet. Around a hundred protesters have already been arrested. The protesters have claimed the talks between developing and the developed countries have broken down.

The World leaders have begun arriving in the Copenhagen for a final lap of the summit even knowing the fact that\ there will be no significant agreement reached on climate change at the session.

The Developed countries like Australia are accused by developing the countries like India and China of trying to renege on the commitments that are made in the Kyoto Protocol. The Richer countries are now pushing for international scrutiny of what countries like India will do for reducing their emissions.

India on the other hand claims that the developed countries are guilty of highest emission levels and instead of directing us they should accept the voluntary cuts that developing countries are considering, and help with funding for the new eco-friendly technology. The European Union is also pushing for a single agreement that ‘goes beyond Kyoto’. The United States have virtually ruled out the carbon cutting targets.
