Merchant navy can be categorized in three areas:
• Service department.
• Engine department
• Deck department
The deck department consists captain, chief officer, second officer, third officer and some more junior officers who help in navigation, loading and unloading of cargo. There after engine department consist chief engineer, radio officers, electrical officers and some junior engineers and they perform the work of installation and repairing of engine, and to supervise the mechanical and electrical work. The work of service department is to provide kitchen, laundry and medical facilities. They also help in coordination among other departments.
Eligibility
To get selected in merchant navy candidate must have the qualification of 10 + 2 with PCM. There are so many institutes which are offering the various courses like B.Sc. in Nautical Science conduct by T.S. Chanakya (Mumbai), Directorate General of Shipping, 4 year marine Engineering degree by Marine Engineering Research Bangalore which includes 1 year on-board degree.
