Ballan sprinted away from a break with group on the last round in Varese to come first by 3 seconds from group-friend Denmark’s Matti Breschel, Cunego and Damiano. Ballan’s triumph gave Italy a 19th world race designation and an Italian will wear the coveted rainbow jersey for the third successive year.
